Chris Andrew -
Jazz improv piano

I signed up for some jazz improv piano classes at Stanford and was quickly humbled when I sat down in my group lesson beside a 11 year old with a bowl-cut.  A bowl-cut, perfect pitch and an honest feel for jazz.

I thought I’d be safe in the “intermediate” class but when they started throwing around  B flat augmented seventh’s with flatted 9ths and sharped 13ths, and let’s roll it out with a harmonic line on top I knew I was done.

I’m inspired to work through this class and pick up a lot of the theory I skipped in my 10 years of classical lessons.  I love watching faces, and anticipation as people listen and play jazz. Leading notes that leave you empty, as hands dive for minor strokes are my favorite.
