Yesterday I walked by the front desk at Intuit and heard, the typical spiel - “thanks for calling, where may I direct your call.”
Memories of my first summer “internship” at a community bank in Concord, NH came back pretty strong. After quitting as a “well pump technician” I moved on to the more lucrative career of being a switchboard operator at Merrimack County Savings Bank. It was a summer of intense clock watching, but I learned a lot after a few thousand “How may I direct your calls”. My biggest challenge during the day would be noon. It was the transition from the AM “good morning how may I direct your call” to the PM “good afternoon how may I direct your call”. You’d be surprised the challenge that presents.
Glad to be off the phones.
